Bob and I had been hanging around since high school back in Columbus. Later he moved to Cincinnati and joined up with The Ed Davis Band; he was the bassist in the first lineup and the guitarist after Byron moved to NYC. He was involved in We're Just Like You activities as well, and was one of those who lived in the Fifth Street loft. Later he met Ann; they married, bought a beautiful old house, and had some kids. He was best man at my wedding in ’89.

Dad would schedule several stops at the jazz clubs during every trip; we went to Fat Tuesday's, The Blue Note, Sweet Basil's, The Village Vanguard, even a stop at a small club up near Columbia to see Lee Konitz. One night at the Blue Note at a Carmen MacCrea show Tony Bennett asked to sit at our table. In the same club I saw Buddy Rich play a drum roll with his foot. My most vivid memories are of the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis band at the Vanguard and several Chris Connor shows at Sweet Basil's. She remains one of my favorite singers.

Later in the trip there was always a stop at Katz's or the Luna in Little Italy.
